Why a Masters Degree is Worth It

With the current economy, many people are considering going back to school to get their Master’s in Business Administration (MBA).  The question that many have been asking themselves is whether going back to school to get your MBA is worth the value.  When asking hiring managers or management recruiters, many have much to say in the true value of an MBA.

What an MBA Says About a Job Candidate: Hiring managers and recruiters have all said that there is always two ways to looking at a job candidate with an MBA.  Usually that individual with an MBA has a higher intelligence and is a person who values higher education.  An MBA job candidate is also someone who understands that there are some career advantages to having the advanced degree.

However, there can also be a disadvantage with a job candidate who posses an MBA.  Perhaps after earning their bachelor’s degree, the job candidate could not find an adequate job and therefore continued their education towards their MBA.  The hiring manager or recruiter will need to meet with the individual to determine their grasp of the business world and how they relate in it.

The Importance of the Type of MBA Program: The recent explosion of online MBA courses has given individuals many new opportunities to pursue their education.  There was a time, when most employers looked more favorably towards the more traditional MBA classroom schools.  However, times are challenging and many hiring managers and recruiters understand that a balance of work experience and higher education is important.  The exceptions to the traditional classroom experience instead of online MBA courses are teaching and medicine.  Many job candidates will find that the combination of having job experience while pursuing an MBA program is the best approach.

The Overall Value of an MBA: An MBA is still mandatory to those who are looking at the entry level positions with any of the Fortune 200 companies.  Classroom based MBA job candidates will usually fill these entry-level feeder positions.  However, many other MBA job candidates will find that real world business experience will always trump a higher education.  Many employers are looking at job candidates who posses successful business experiences.  Anyone who has an MBA must have this job experience to be considered a serious candidate.  With just classroom experience, many MBA job candidates will not be ready to step in and perform immediately.
